PIAP Space has signed a contract with the European Space Agency for the development of a robotic arm for servicing satellites. The project called TITAN will be implemented for over EUR 2.5 million. This is the first large contract for the development of the entire satellite subsystem for the Polish space industry.
The result of signing the contract will be robotic arm prototype for future in-orbit satellite deorbiting and servicing. A laboratory model of a robotic joint will be created, and then – a prototype consisting of various types of joints, which will be subjected to full environmental tests on a shaker, thermal and thermal-vacuum tests. Ultimately, the project will achieve the technological readiness level of TRL 6.
– The TITAN project is a great success of the company, for which we have been working with a team of subcontractors for almost 3 years. This project is particularly important to us – it is a proof of the trust ESA, which entrusted the integration of the entire satellite subsystem of the Polish organization. A lot of hard work is ahead of us, but it is an important step in achieving the company’s strategic goals. The robotic arm developed by the TITAN project allows the servicing of damaged satellites and the deorbiting of satellites whose mission time has expired and threatens other objects in orbit. In this way,the removal of “space rubbish”, dangerous for the proper functioning of satellites, will be possible with the participation of a Polish company, PIAP Space.
